Do You Need Your Own Insurance to Rent an Exotic Car?
Yes — and here is exactly what to ask your insurer before you book.
This is the single most common reason a rental falls over on the day, and it is entirely avoidable with one phone call. You need valid insurance in your own name that covers you to drive a vehicle you do not own, at this value. Most people assume they have it. A meaningful number do not.
Why we insist on it
These are expensive cars and the exposure on any given day is real. Rather than bundle an insurance product into the rate and charge everybody for it, we ask you to be properly covered and keep the rate lower. That is the trade, and it is why our numbers look the way they do.
What to ask your insurer
Call them and ask three questions. First: does my policy extend to a rental vehicle I do not own? Second: is there a value cap on that extension, and what is it? Third: does it cover a vehicle of this type — some policies word an exclusion around exotic, high-performance or luxury vehicles specifically. Get the answer to all three, because the second and third are where people get caught.
If your policy will not cover it
Most insurers can add temporary cover for a specific vehicle and a specific set of dates, often for very little. Ask about a rider or an endorsement. If you do not currently hold a personal auto policy at all — because you do not own a car, which is common for visitors and for people who live downtown — a non-owner policy is the usual route and can normally be arranged quickly.
Credit card coverage
Some premium cards include rental car cover. Read the terms rather than assuming, because exotic, luxury and high-value vehicles are among the most commonly excluded categories in those benefits, and the value caps are often well below what these cars are worth. If your card genuinely covers it, bring the documentation.
What we check, and when
At the handover, in person. We look at the card or the certificate and confirm it is current and in your name. Nothing is uploaded to this site, nothing is stored here, and we do not keep a copy afterwards. If the cover is not there, we cannot hand the car over — and we would much rather establish that on the phone a week earlier than in a hotel driveway.
The deposit is not insurance
People sometimes assume the security deposit covers damage in the way a policy would. It does not. It is a refundable hold, released after the car is inspected. Your insurance is what stands behind the car while you have it.
Common questions
- What if I just want to buy cover from you?
- We do not sell insurance. What we do is tell you clearly what you need so you can arrange it properly with somebody who does, usually for less than a bundled product would cost.
- Will you check my insurance before the day?
- Gladly, and we would encourage it. Call us with the details when you book and we will tell you whether what you have is going to work. Ten minutes on the phone in advance saves a cancelled rental.
- Does my insurance need to cover the full value of the car?
- That is exactly the question to put to your insurer, and the answer depends on your policy and the car. Tell us which vehicle you want and we will tell you what it is worth so you can ask precisely.
